In the run up to Christmas, it’s always fun to see the innovative manner in which the champagne houses present us with new and exciting products.

Today it’s the turn of the house of Veuve Cliquot to come under the spotlight, with two new products available.

Veuve Clicquot en Ballade avec Suits Me

Inspired surely by a combination of modern city gent and the memory of bygone times when a less frenetic atmosphere reigned.

In the bright orangey yellow that’s the signature of this champagne house, this is a clever method of both transporting any size bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne as well as keeping it at the perfect drinking temperature for up to two hours.

Veuve Clicquot
This is definitely a luxury baggage item, boasting an isotherm area that cradles the bottle for temperature control, and the handle of an ‘umbrella’ that you can hang over your arm to carry.

Retailing at around €50 euros, the Veuve Clicquot en Ballade avec Suits Me certainly adds a stylish alternative to a regular carry box.

Veuve Clicquot Millésimée 2004 La Grande Dame

The house has also recently unveiled the new Millésimée 2004 La Grande Dame, presented in an entirely new packaging – Le Coffret Reveal – in a deep black.

La Grande Dame was first created in 1972 to celebrate the bicentenary of Veuve Clicquot, and was so named after Madame Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin.

Why is champagne a drink for celebrations and used to mark special occasions? Is it just because it’s exclusive and iconic?

The bubbly, light-colored wine has historically been associated with luxury and the parties of the royal courts and aristocracy of Europe, said Kolleen M. Guy, associate professor of history at the University of Texas at San Antonio and author of “When Champagne Became French” (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003).

Just the act of opening a champagne bottle is enough
… to mark a celebration, and in some cases, the bubbling beverage isn’t even consumed during the festivities, Guy said.

But it’s not is not just Popping the cork and toasting as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. It is also history:

1915 English magazine illustration of a woman riding a Champagne cork

What do we know from the history?
Fred Chandon offered their champagne to the winners of French Formula 1 Grand Prix events sometimes in the 30’s. The race took place at the famous Reims circuit in the heart of Champagne.

But for 30 years the winners drank the Champagne: Then in 1967, Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt sprayed for the first time a bottle of champagne from the winner’s podium after they won in 1967 the 24h Race of Le Mans in a Ford GT40. Gurney, not a drinker, was handed the victors’ bottle of Moët et Chandon and instead of swigging it as previous winners were accustomed to doing, he grabbed the open bottle, shook it vigorously and with his thumb over the open neck began to “spray” the celebratory crowd present in victory circle – starting a tradition for winners in all sports that has lasted to this day.

Now, Alcohol is legal
When the prohibition of of alcoholic beverages ended in the United States (on December 5, 1933), there were two companies in the alcohol industry that wanted to make the most out of this event by creating a marketing campaign to celebrate for this unique moment. Those companies were Anheuser-Busch (a beer producer) and Moët & Chandonand (a champagne producer).

Moët & Chandonand developed a new prestige cuvée that. It was released on December 5th to celebrate the end of prohibition.
Note: A prestige cuvée is the name given to the best Champagnes a Champagne house produces. Each of the Champagne houses (called Marquees) usually produce several different prestige cuvées, each with a unique brand name.

Already in 1882
Much earlier (1882) Henry Vizetelly, a British author, commented on the use of Champagne at launchings, inaugurations and celebrations. The British have been launching ships with wine since the 17th Century.

“I would say that champagne is important symbolically.”
She said and “Many athletes and race car drivers have champagne poured on them… but don’t drink it,”

And now let us find something to celebrate

So, if there’s any invention of the 20th century that’s the epitome of convenience, mass marketing and embraced by people the world over, it must be that of the canned drink.

There’s probably not a person alive today who would bat an eyelid as someone pops the tab on such a drink; but perhaps they might if the drink contained within was genuine champagne.

champagne-can

But come on, are we really ready to see our favourite bubbly available in canned form?

Well, according to the company, Wine Barokes, perhaps we are.  It seems that the market for canned drinks is growing faster in Europe than in any other area of the world.  Whilst globally the market grew by 31 per cent between 1998 – 2010 (with an annual total of 269 billion cans), in Europe this rose by a massive 61 per cent.

And nestled confidently within this mass market is the consumer desire for canned wines.  Rising by between 10 to 15 per cent per year, rose and sparkling wines account for 60 per cent of this market share.

But champagne?  Are we really ready for that?  And what would be the consequences of containing our fizz within an aluminium drinks can?  Pulling the tab on one of those certainly won’t have the same ring to it as the classic ‘pop’ of a champagne cork.

And whilst Greg Stokes and Steve Barics of Wine Barokes are in talks with several European wine produces, the chances of champagne being sold in this manner in the near future are looking pretty slim.

Indeed, the CIVC (Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne), is quick to reassure that the specifications of producing and selling champagne is extremely specific.  And the industry is not ready to make the move to canned champagne products just yet.

When you think of the character of James Bond, then certain luxurious products automatically spring to mind.  So the pairing of Bollinger Champagne with the man with a license to kill is probably a match made in heaven.

Bollinger James Bond Edition

002 for 007 is a limited edition created by Bollinger to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bond…. James Bond, to hit the screen.  Containing a bottle of Bollinger La Grande Année 2002 inside a box in the shape of a firearm silencer, only 30,000 of these will be produced.

The box of the Bollinger 007 Bottle
The box itself requires a 3 digit code to open it (it’s easy to find), and the bottle of champagne has a specially designed label in black and white and sporting ‘007’ symbol with revolver that’s instantly recognisable throughout the world.  The colour scheme continues on the foil covering of the neck of the bottle, giving the whole package a unified and distinctly masculine feel.

It appears that French scientists have now come up with the ultimate method in which to pour our bubbles.

According to a report in the ACS bi-weekly journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, scientists have ‘revealed’ that the taste and aromas of champagne are in no small way affected by the bubbles within.  And the method in which the fizz is poured into the glass can have a direct effect on the gas levels in the drink, and therefore the quality and enjoyment of the drinker.

champagne-can

Well – we don’t know about you, but we reckon that most serious champagne drinkers already know that, don’t you think?

The report then goes onto explain the ultimate way in which to pour champagne; by pouring the bubbly liquid down the side of a tilted glass.  Excuse us, but isn’t that what we’ve all being doing for centuries, at least in some way?

And another fascinating insight that the report has come out with is that champagne is best served chilled.  Well, isn’t that something that’s going to hit the headlines…  Although, to give the scientists credit, the report does go onto explain the reasons why chilling the champers goes a fair way to ensuring that the carbon dioxide gas (and therefore the bubbles) remain in the liquid for as long as possible.

“Moreover, the higher the Champagne temperature is, the higher its loss of dissolved carbon dioxide during the pouring process, which finally constitutes the first analytical proof that low temperatures prolong the drink’s chill and help sit to retain its effervescence during the pouring process”

Back in 2009, a study by German scientists proved that the bubbles in champagne and other sparkling wines had a direct effect on how the bodies taste receptors react to a drink, with the discovery of a taste receptor in the tongue.  In fact, there are up to 30 times more flavour enhancing chemicals in the bubbles than in the rest of the drink itself.  Therefore anything that can be done to keep the gas within the champagne for as long as possible can only be a good thing.

Just remember – champagne is not beer.  And pouring it in that manner is probably not the ideal method in which to do so.  So let’s all stick to the way we’ve been pouring it for centuries.  After all – time and experience really is the best educator, after all…

Well, a year has passed since Remy Cointreau sold the champagne brands, Piper Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck to the family run group, EPI.

So, what has happened in the last 12 months, and what can we expect to see gracing the shelves in this new era of Heidsieck champagne?

It seems that there are quite a few changes, and definitely a more youthful look for both brands of bubbly.  The pastel pink colours of before have been replaced by a more vibrant and vivid tone, and the calligraphy on the labels has disappeared and is now a far more 21st century, narrow font block text.

The bottles themselves are following current trends such as that being trail blazed by Bollinger Champagne – with a tapered body and thinner neck.

Charles Heidsieck

Charles Heidsieck

But, most importantly, let’s talk about the champagne itself.  These new bottles of fizz will consist of 60 per cent wine from the year 2008, and the remaining 40 per cent of reserve wines from harvests that took place 10 years ago or more.  It’s this usage of 40 per cent reserve wines that will continue to maintain the much-loved continuity of the Heidsieck style.

The price has also changed – with these bottles being priced at between €40 – €45 euros per bottle.
